Attending College

How many times did your parents, teachers or other adults ask you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My son has told me everything from; ninja to chemist to mechanic. Personally I’m cheering for the chemist! I remember as a kid thinking that I wanted to be a jockey in the Kentucky derby, never mind that I didn’t own a horse and had never taken riding lessons!

We all have dreams and aspirations of growing up to be something fulfilling. Over time those dreams change and evolve. I don’t know of a single person who said in kindergarten that they wanted to be a biochemical engineer and then ended up actually pursuing that as an adult. As we gain experience and knowledge what we think possible expands and becomes virtually limitless.

For many, many careers college will be a necessity. Deciding if college is right for you is the first step. Then it’s on to enrolling, applying for financial aid, preparing for classes getting books and other materials in alternative formats, hiring readers, see what the Students with Disabilities office has to offer, working with vocational rehabilitation, and don't forget to get involved in recreational activities!

The information shared is based on the various writer’s experiences and specific situations. There will be some variance among rehabilitation agencies and educational institutions. However the choice whether or not to use students with disabilities offices is a personal choice, no matter what state you live in or what educational program you attend.
