Recreational Activities

College can be real boring and tedious if you concentrate only on academics. Have some fun and get involved with on-campus recreational activities, groups, organizations, sports and events.

Most campuses have a student activities department where you can be updated on the events taking place on your campus. See if this info is available on a web site somewhere.

Sometimes, one thing that can be difficult is when there are special tables at the university and you never know they’re there because no one tells you. When I walk through an area of campus where I know tables are often set up, I listen to see if people are talking to someone at a table. Two weeks ago, for example, there was a table at the university and someone was there trying to get students to sign a petition. I was very interested in the petition once I learned what it was about. I was glad I stopped.

On another occasion, the girl scouts were there selling Girl Scout cookies, but no one told me that was happening. So it’s important to read your on-campus newspaper, and contact the student activities office often to find out the latest events. You don’t want to miss the good stuff!

For a short time, I wrote for the campus newspaper. It was a lot of fun. I got to meet lots of people. I also gained some valuable experience that I might be able to use later.

There are also sororities and fraternities on campus if you wish to join those. There are religious organizations, organizations for different ethnicities, organizations for students interested in the same hobbies or causes, etc. It’s hard not to find something of interest.

Usually in the beginning of the fall semester all of the campus organizations, clubs and groups will have a sort of expo thing. There will be booths with information about each group, what they do, how to get involved and that sort of thing. Check it out!

Another thing that really helped me through college tremendously was my relationship with Chris. When things were not going the way I wanted, it was nice to go home to someone and talk about the day’s events. You can talk to friends and family too, but having someone special to share all your good and bad times through college with is so wonderful.

I lived in an on-campus apartment during college, and Chris lived with me when he came here. Even the apartment complex had many activities we could participate in. There wasn’t a week that went by where we didn’t participate in nightly activities with other residents and staff of the apartment complex. Those were some of the most fun and memorable times of my college experience.
